Janice A. Bourdage, MSW, LCSW
Janice Bourdage is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in PA and a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in NY. In addition, Janice is a certified yoga and meditation instructor, who has been actively teaching mindfulness and stress management techniques to individuals, groups, and in corporate settings throughout the Northeast for over thirty years.
Following a successful career as a professional modern dancer and theater artist in NYC, Janice received her Masters Degree in Social Work, with a clinical concentration, from Fordham University, NY, NY. Additional training includes a four-year training program at the Helix Institute for Healing and Psychotherapy, a certificate program at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies, both in Manhattan, and introductory courses at the Institute for Restorative Justice in Bethlehem.
A rich history of work experience prior to Bethlehem Counseling Associates includes the following: working with children and young adults in both school-based and homeless transitional settings; provision of spiritually-based, non-denominational counseling to adults of all ages; and provision of counseling and community linkage to adults with severe and persistent mental illness.
Throughout her extensive counseling history, Janice has interacted with clients from widely diverse socio-economic populations throughout the life-span, from children to elderly adults, with a variety of needs and concerns. Janice is continually amazed at the resiliency, strengths, and skills her clients bring to the table, even in the face of often daunting psychosocial stressors.
Whether work with Janice is short-term solution-focused counseling or longer-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, you will be given the option to incorporate aspects from various holistic body-mind approaches, as well as explore and implement other stress reduction techniques and lifestyle choices that support optimal physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.
Janice believes that throughout your life span, each life cycle presents unique opportunities and challenges. Special attention will be paid to the particular life cycle you are currently in, with an eye to optimizing your strengths. In addition to exploring you, as a unique and dynamic individual, Janice will help you to explore the "goodness of fit" between you and your environment. Are the resources you need to fulfill your purpose and find meaning in life available to you in your environment? If so, how well are you connecting to these resources? If not, how and where might you access these resources?
Janice maintains that the best counselors are those who have a wide variety of tools in their therapeutic toolbox and can use these tools with ease, intelligence, and creativity. She is a strong proponent of a strengths-based, client-centered approach in which client and therapist work together to meet the goals that you, the client, have determined are important for you to reach. Over the course of many years, she has cultivated the following evidence-based therapeutic modalities: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy; Short-Term Solution-Focused Therapy; Mindfulness-Based Therapy, Somatic Experiencing (mind-body awareness and integration); and Acceptance and Commitment therapy.
With warmth, humor, enthusiasm, and an unwavering belief in the ability of all people to live healthy, balanced lives, Janice currently focuses on working with adolescents and adults, ages 14 and above, as well as providing couples and marriage counseling. She has extensive experience working with anxiety; depression; severe and persistent mental illness; family-of-origin and relationship issues; trauma (PTSD and developmental trauma); loss and grief; and life-cycle transitions.
